Clunk when shifting from park to drive or reverse

So my 2018 X5 has developed this annoying clunk whenever I shift from park to drive or into reverse. It doesn't happen every time but maybe half the time, and I can feel a little thud through the whole car. The transmission itself shifts fine once I'm moving, no slipping or weirdness. I've read online that worn engine mounts can cause the drivetrain to shift under load and make a clunk like that. A couple of people also mentioned it could be the transmission mount or even the differential bushings. I don't wanna just start replacing things and hoping. I've been looking for an Authorized Engine Mount Service that can actually inspect the mounts properly because I know on these cars they're fluid filled and can leak without looking obviously collapsed. Has anyone had a similar clunk on the F15 generation and found out it was the mounts? Also wondering if there's a way to test them by having someone watch the engine while I shift. Really don't want this to be a transfer case issue because that sounds expensive. Any advice on what to check first or a shop in Abu Dhabi that won't charge me a fortune to diagnose would be great. Thanks everyone.

Clunk felt through the whole car when shifting into drive or reverse on an F15 X5 is classic fluid filled engine mount failure. These mounts leak internally without any visible external sign, and the collapsed mount allows the drivetrain to rotate under torque load before the slack is taken up.

Having someone watch the engine from outside while you shift between park and drive is exactly the right test. Visible engine movement of more than a few millimeters when torque is applied confirms mount failure without any specialist equipment needed as a first check.

Transmission mount and differential bushings are worth inspecting alongside the engine mounts since all three work together to control drivetrain movement under load. A clunk from any one of them produces a similar whole car thud sensation that makes isolating the source difficult without a proper lift inspection.

Fluid filled BMW engine mounts on the F15 are known to fail between 80k and 120k km and the clunk on engagement is one of the most consistent symptoms reported by owners. It is a targeted and relatively straightforward repair compared to the transfer case concern you are worried about.

Half the time occurrence rather than every time suggests the mount is partially collapsed rather than completely failed. Catching it now before it goes completely means the repair is cleaner and there is less risk of secondary stress on the transmission mounts from the drivetrain movement.
